..The Minimalist Closet Chronicle
Chapter 1
Once upon a time, there was a stylist who had the dream closet,i mean a room literally dedicated to just clothing, shoes and accessories. The room housed H- Racks, 4 ways and circle racks galore. Most people would deem that space as a Boutique due to all the amazing finds, styles and trends. From everything from retro, vintage, one-of-a kind, and past to present trends, hell even some futuristic styles were draped on plastic or wire hangers.Options were limitless and choices were hard. Anybody who visited said closet would marvel at its appearance, and gasped at what was hung before them.
Then...
The Stylist was whisked away to another land where everything she had was left behind, and a new lifestyle was beckoned. Her new space was small, shared and very temporary, so the need for her many furs, dozens of shoes, loads of accessories, and numerous (literally many) outfit selections couldn't be accommodated.Sooo a slim selection of necessities was chosen and the start of becoming a Minimalist Fashionista began...
Sooo if you couldn't tell, this fashion fairytale belongs to yours truly. As of recently, I have moved back home from Atlanta to New York, to do some self work and reflection all while securing the bag "cha-ching $$$". Me moving meant not only leaving my love ones and friends behind BUT also my entire wardrobe which i love with a capital L.O.V.E! Just thinking about all of my special pieces left behind (all in good hands) makes me sick to my stomach and weak in the heart. However, we shall be reunited once again and for good soon enough.
Me having to monopolize and prioritize my wardrobes takes and stays was thee hardest thing. Having to pick and choose what was coming and what was staying was super difficult mainly because i literally love all my clothes, and NYC is the Fashion Capital sooo the question of what to take was prominent as hell. How did i manage? is what you're probably asking right?! Well, the question I had to ask myself was " what season(s) are approaching, and what will i wear realistically?". NYC summer heat is a different type of heat, its muggy, sticky, hazy, humid and above all else over populated so its hot as HELL!!! So with that in mind, I had to pack light, sensibly and fashionable all in one. Taking these aspects all into consideration, made it somewhat easier to make my choices in what to bring, which led to the idea of the Fashion Minimalist.Initially, just the word "minimal" made me cringe especially when it came to clothes, my clothes specifically lol. However, after doing some research i began to look at this Minimalist Wardrobe as more of a challenge rather than a discouragement.
So here's the tea on what becoming a Fashion Minimalist entails. Owning less doesn't necessarily mean that you CAN NOT go shopping and stay on top of trends, nope not at all, see there's ways around it and I'll explain how later in this segment. By having fewer articles of clothes makes it easier to mix and match and see exactly what you have and also what you don't, and if you're anything like me everyday is a struggle to figure out what it is i wanna wear, mostly due to the fact that i have a lot of clothes and my style consist of so many options that as a result me choosing an outfit (unless i know in my head what look I'm going for) becomes a bit tedious. However, being introduced to the minimalist lifestyle has definitely assisted in my outfit choices. Owning less is (in my opinion) less stressful and stressful all in one. Reason being, coming from a "boutique" style closet & converting to a 1 rack lifestyle is a bit of a change for me, yet i have been enjoying it.See how that's sort of sweet & sour?! It has been easier when knowing exactly what i have and what possible pairings i can match up with it, and being that it's summertime= less clothing...ayyye!
The Pros's of having a minimalist closet are as follows:
- creates more space (free up some room)
- saves you $$$ (secure the bag)
- allows you to see what you have and become creative (mix-n-match it up)
- and it saves you time (which waits for no one)
Ladies... with pros's like these who needs to hear the con's (which i don't have). Now, i know most wanna know how can you keep up with the rapid trends and styles and still maintain a minimalist closet? Easy answer, re-selling your gently used clothes, shoes and accessories. There are a bunch of resale and consignment businesses that cater to your style and aesthetic. You can sell some of your items, make some cash on hand ooor trade by using the credit towards new items. In my opinion this is the best way of maintaining your minimalist wardrobe all while staying trendy and up to date with the latest trends. The goal is to attain less so say for example you take 14 pieces to a resale venue and manage to sell 11/14 items, so when you shop/ trade your only replacing those 11 items or less. GET IT? K... remember the key to the minimalist closet is less is more, so you want to declutter and take stock of your closet inventory, by knowing what you have already verses what you need. Now this is a bit tricky, especially if you're a fashion hogg like me and can't resist a good sale or an awesome find. However, this is a challenge that can be easily conquered as long as you stay consistent and focused.
Living in NYC is definitely difficult in a fashion sense, due to the fact that fashion trends and brands bloom everyday here, so new trends are sparking up left and right, and for someone who has recently converted to a minimalist wardrobe lifestyle this makes it both easy and difficult, so finding my balance is key and also achievable. My personal style varies and is ever changing from day to day, one minute I'm monochrome down, the next I'm a myriad of vibrant bold patterns and colors. My style reflects my feeling and i do not discriminate, and if you know me you definitely know what i am talking about.
So ladies, build your Style Capsule and try it out. Send me pics, and your thoughts on the idea of having or possibly entertaining a Minimalist Wardrobe/ Closet. Have fun downsizing, invite your girlfriends over and make it a thing, hey maybe they can help get some of those unwanted clothes off your hands. Happy Minimalizing!
